What is Coercive Control?

Coercive control is the root of domestic violence.

Across the US, states are proposing and revising domestic violence laws to add a "coercive control" definition to the books! Notably, California and Hawaii laws went into effect in 2021.

Where do other states, and specifically New Jersey, stand on this seminal public policy issue impacting more than 10 million abuse victims every year?

New Jersey's Prevention of Domestic Violence Act (PDVA) has long included non-physical violence of harassment and threats as part its fabric, but how do the courts view this issue?

There's a disconnect that we must all raise to our legislators and appointed judges before it's too late! Did you know that there is a bill on the floor of the NJ Assembly proposing to add "coercive control" to the definition of domestic violence right now?

Read the proposed amendment at legiscan.com, click here. (external link to a national database that tracks legislation)

According to the proposal: “Coercive Control” means a pattern of behavior that in purpose or effect unreasonably interferes with a person’s free will and personal liberty.”

Let's look at the statute and court decisions issued by the state's Appeals Court, and together, figure out how to make sense of it all.
